A PWA is simply a website that is built with modern tech allowing it to behave exactly like an app you'd download from Apple or Google. When you install one, it drops a high-res icon on your home screen, launches in full-screen mode (goodbye, clunky browser address bars), and can even work offline.

The best part? Because you are installing it directly from the browser, it takes up virtually zero storage space on your phone and bypasses the App Store entirely. Here is the secret to installing them.

Installing on an iPhone or iPad

Apple makes this incredibly easy, but there is one major catch: You must use Safari. If you open the link in Chrome or Firefox on your iPhone, Apple restricts the "Add to Home Screen" feature.

  1. Open the Safari browser on your iOS device and navigate to the web app's URL.
  2. Look at the bottom center of your screen and tap the Share icon (the little square with an arrow pointing upward).
  3. Scroll down the menu list until you see Add to Home Screen and tap it.
  4. You’ll be given a chance to rename the app if you want. Once you're happy, tap Add in the top right corner.

  4. Look through the menu for an option that says Install App or Add to Home screen and tap it.
